What is the meaning of the word covenant that is found 290 times in God's word? Well, the definition of a covenant is a contract or agreement between two parties. It is better described as a chosen relationship between two parties working together to reach a common goal binding them together. The Old Testament Hebrew word 'berith' is derived from a root word meaning "to cut," and hence a covenant is a "cutting" with reference to the cutting or dividing sacrificing of animals into two parts, and the contracting parties passing between them, thus making a covenant between the two parties. The corresponding Greek word in the New Testament is 'diatheke' which is rendered "testament." but it is also meaning covenant.
