Turning Water Into Wine

What is the significance of turning water into wine?  This miracle was told in John 2:1-11.  I have been studying about Apostle Peter but keep getting sidetrack on these other hidden nuggets connected within this story.  This is one of them.  Everything Jesus did meant something.  Well let's get digging in this nugget there are so many symbolic meanings within these 11 scriptures that is most definitely worth looking into. The setting for this first miracle was a marriage celebration being held in a village in Cana believed to be near Nazareth where Jesus was born.  Mary the mother of Jesus was invited, and Jesus and his disciples had been invited.  John 2:1 tells us that the upcoming miracle happened on the 3rd Day of the celebration.

Mary the mother of Jesus must have heard the party had run out of wine which would have been very humiliating during their time.  She went and told Jesus what was going on then she turned to the servants and advised them to do whatever Jesus told them.  Jesus instructs the servants to fill the 6 large stone vessels with water.

There are two significances of the 6 stone water pots:

A. These large stone pots were used for ritual Purification washings.  It was written in the Law of Moses that the vessels had to be carved from stone due to stone not becoming impure like vessels made from pottery.  The purpose of the washing ritual was to become spiritually clean or holy. It was important in the Jewish law to be ceremonially clean, especially when food was involved.  Here the water represents the law as it represents efforts to make oneself clean. What can wash away our sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus.  Jesus would later tell his disciples at the Last Supper that the wine represents his blood which we now know will wash away our sins and make us white as snow.

B. There were 6 stone vessels. 6 being the number of creation and the number of man. I have found that Hebrew is aloha-numeric which means numbers are represented by letters.  The number 6 in Hebrew is represented by the letter Vav.  Vav is the letter that is used in Genesis as the conjunction that connects heaven and earth.  The fall in the garden broke that connection on the 6th day but Jesus being the second Adam reverse the curse in order to restore connection as Jesus died on the 6th day to make atonement for mankind.

After the servants filled the vessels, Jesus instructed them to draw out and take it to the governor of the feast.  When the governor had tasted he proclaimed that usually people would give the best wine first and then serve lesser quality wine later but, in this case, they have saved the best wine for last.  Jesus had turned the Water into Wine!

I have come to the realization through these past recent years that every single thing Jesus did and said while here on earth had significant meaning.   Why would turning water into wine be forever known as Jesus first public miracle?  I believe it is because there is a connection to the Exodus miracles God used through Moses to get Pharoah to “Let His People Go!” Through the recent study on Jesus being tempted in the wilderness this also refers back to the temptations found in the Exodus.  In order for Jesus to show himself as the prophetic Messiah he needed to show himself to be greater than the Prophet Moses as stated in Deuteronomy 18:18. Jesus himself stated he didn’t come to do away with the law but to fulfill the law. This first miracle was the beginning of him fulfilling the law.  The first time Moses went to Pharaoh to inquire of him to release God's chosen people, Pharoah refused. Moses then stretched out his rod over the waters and they were turned into blood. Jesus being greater than Moses even though instigated by his mother Mary, he was fulfilling this prophetic miracle with a greater meaning.  Jesus came to set mankind free from their sins and to teach us all about the kingdom of God.

Jesus and his mother knew the families of the two who were getting married at Cana. There is significance in the fact that the first public miracle happened at a wedding celebration. Jesus tells us in John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.  Biblical weddings in Galilee were a huge occasion that wine played an important part of the celebration. During that time preparing for a wedding feast took almost a whole year and the feast itself lasted seven days. It would have been humiliating to the wedding party to have run out of something so important as the wine. The symbolism within this first miraculous event represents Jesus as the bridegroom in the kingdom of God and how it is his blood's atonement that will save his bride that makes her pure and white.  There are many scripture references where Jesus is referred to as the bridegroom in the Kingdom of God. In Colossians 1:18 And he (Jesus) is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.   Jesus refers to himself as the bridegroom in Matthew 9:15 and in Revelation 19:7 "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." Jesus being the head of the church represents the bridegroom and the church is his bride. Isaiah 54:5 For they Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and they Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
Jesus tells his disciples in Matthew 26:28 At the last supper that he would no more drink the fruit of the vine ‘until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.’ Here Jesus is referring to The Marriage Supper of the Lamb in Rev 19:9. The joy and celebration that is awaiting all of us who make ourselves ready and awaiting the soon coming Bridegroom.  My prayers are that you make your preparations now and be prepared for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Do not find yourself in the position of the five foolish bridesmaids that ran out of oil and missed the groom's and the feast.  God bless each of you.
